Made an NC belt buckle. Work in progress, but happy with the results so far. Still have to attach it to belt buckle hardware. Used an MDF mold made on my desktop CNC router.

Neat. I like it when people make things.

I was today years old when I learned what a CNC router is and I’m smitten.

I really hate the American education system, if I had been allowed to take shop in high school instead of a bunch of college prep/AP bullshit  I had no interest in I’d probably be an engineer now.

interesting, i’ve never seen wood or mdf used as a mold before.

I did sand casting aluminum during metal shop in highschool and its fun to melt metal.

You have access to a high temp furnace or can pewter melt stovetop?

Wait.... you had me at "desktop CNC router". Tell me more! Is it a homemade deal? What drivers are you using? Is it GRBL based?

I’ve used wood molds for vacuum thermoforming before. Depending on the manufacturing process, wood can work amazing well for tooling.

Pewter melts around 300C depending on the composition.

Very nice! I’ve occasionally thought about a CNC router. I’m with BaconSandwich - I’d love to learn more about yours.

I had shop in middle school but the program was gone by the time I got to highschool. Still made an impact though, got a degree in Industrial Design with a concentration in Furniture Design and now I do that professionally.

CNC machines are great fun, trying to get my boss to buy a big one.

I do have access to a high temp furnace but I melted the pewter shown here with a propane torch and a stainless steel ladel.

I’ve had it for about 2 years now, built from a kit that is now discontinued. Company makes a larger kit now and I’m really tempted to get, but I don’t have space for a 30" by 30" machine. Runs off GRBL and a little Audrino CNC shield thing. Don’t know much about the controller but I do know I have to have a fan blowing on it for it to work properly (kit came from Canada and I’m using it in 107° Atlanta, checks out).

Company that makes the kit is Sienci.
